The Unsung Heroes of British Weather Observation: A Story of Dedication and Data
In a country where discussing the weather is a national pastime, there exists a dedicated group of individuals who take this interest to the next level. These are the rainfall measurers of Britain, whose passion and precision have left an invaluable legacy.
The tradition began with Richard Towneley in 1677, who initiated the practice of regularly measuring rainfall at Towneley Hall. Fast forward to 1860, and George Symons took it a step further, coordinating a nationwide effort through the British Rainfall Organisation. With data from hundreds of rain gauges, Symons laid the foundation for a comprehensive understanding of Britain's rainfall patterns.
But here's where it gets truly impressive: some observers dedicated their lives to this pursuit. Clement Lindley Wragge, for instance, embarked on a daily 22km trek to the top of Ben Nevis, the UK's highest peak, to retrieve data from a weather station. This commitment is nothing short of extraordinary!
And this dedication has spanned generations. Tom Bown, who began his daily observations at just 10 years old in 1948, is a testament to the longevity of this tradition. His 75+ years of data collection from his family farm on Anglesey is a remarkable achievement, recognized with an MBE.
However, there's a twist in this tale. Researchers are concerned that the enthusiasm for gathering rainfall data is waning. Paradoxically, we have more data from the 1880s than the most recent decade. This decline in data collection could impact our ability to improve weather forecasts and climate models.
