Former pro rider Nicholas Roche is eyeing a comeback, but not as you'd expect! After an impressive career spanning almost 20 years, including two Vuelta a Espana stage wins, Roche retired in 2021. But retirement didn't slow him down.
Roche has been far from idle, diving into gravel racing and achieving notable success with multiple podium finishes in the US. He's also been busy off the bike, investing in businesses and representing Bianchi as a brand ambassador. Plus, he's a familiar face on TV as a cycling commentator.
And now, a surprising twist: Roche reveals he's been offered a job as a sports director! "I've been talking to some teams, and I was actually offered a position this year," he said. But here's where it gets intriguing: this offer isn't just a fleeting idea.
Roche, at 41, has already taken steps towards this new role by completing the UCI sports director course, earning him the license to work with teams. He's even spent time with Trinity Racing and the Irish national team.
But why the sudden career shift? Roche explains, "I'm not going to be a gravel racer and brand ambassador forever." He's aware that his current roles might have an expiration date. And while he plans to continue his brand ambassador role for another year, he's already looking ahead.
The WorldTour DS role is particularly appealing as it offers flexibility. Roche envisions a part-time position, allowing him to balance his TV commentary and other commitments. And the idea of returning to the Grand Tours, even if not immediate, is tantalizing.
"I want to have that World Tour DS option for the next few years," he says. But will this potential move spark controversy?
